Blue brick extension, Willowbrae, Edinburgh

This extension to a traditional bungalow in Willowbrae, East of Edinburgh has a small footprint, but a big impact!  It provides a modern kitchen, which is flooded with natural light and enjoys views to the front and to the back garden.  By removing a section of the original external wall, the new kitchen is connected to the original house dining room, creating a sociable space for family gatherings and entertaining.  Large glazed sliding doors provide views and a direct connection to the back garden.  The previous kitchen has been converted into a practical utility room with built-in full height cupboards providing essential storage.  In the hall, poorly utilised circulation space has been turned into more storage, with a full height side window bringing natural light into the centre of the house.

The use of Staffordshire blue brick provides a contrast with the traditional pebbledash of the original house.  The extension is treated as a bold new addition, with a raised planter softening the front elevation, and providing a sense of connection to nature from the hallway.

Insulation has been upgraded, and a new efficient heating system installed.  Finishes and detailing have been considered to ensure the character of the home is maintained, and to provide continuity between new and old.

Architects AGORA prepared the detailed information required to obtain a building warrant, and provided full contract administration services while the project was on-site.
