Our project to deliver two new-build garages in the West Murrayfield Conservation Area has recently completed on site. The new structure replaces a dilapidated and leaky outbuilding and significantly improves the visual character of this sensitive site. The new garages were carefully designed to comply with conservation area planning requirements, while meeting the client’s need for secure, practical parking. Each garage is accessed via an automatic roller door and provides generous space for vehicles and storage. A new retaining wall, finished in the same blue brick as the garage structure, creates an additional surface parking space to the front of the site. Blue brick was selected to harmonise with recent additions to the adjacent house, helping the new building sit comfortably within its setting.
As architects, AGORA successfully led the planning and statutory approvals process, securing both planning consent and a building warrant. Our team also managed the competitive tendering process and provided contract administration throughout construction. The project is a strong example of how high-quality, contemporary design can contribute positively to conservation area contexts. Despite tight site constraints and local sensitivities, the final scheme delivers a durable, low-maintenance, and highly usable facility for our client.
